The fabric that inspired us to create this Mr President line was originally created by Akosombo Textiles Limited, Ghana to commemorate President Barack Obama's visit to the country in 2009. The word 'Akwaaba', seen throughout the print, means 'Welcome' in Ghanaian and the border of the fabric is surrounded by traditional Adinkra symbols.
West Africa has a rich history of using fabric to record important events. During the colonial era, Akan funeral cloths, stamped with Adinkra symbols, inspired the wax-prints manufactured by major European cloth companies for the West African market. When independence was won, the fabric markets reclaimed the tradition with African companies like ATL manufacturing printed fabric for domestic consumers.
